What is Motability?

Motability is a service which has helped millions of people with disabilities to drive a new car for less. Motability also bundles other motoring-related expenses, such as insurance, servicing and MOTs, into one monthly allowance, which makes it easier to keep track of what you’re spending.

If you’re looking for an electric car, then Motability can help with the costs of installing a charger at home, too. Here at Eden, we’re proud to be an approved Motability retailer, but what else do you need to know about this scheme? In this article, we’re going to find out.

What is the Motability Scheme?

Motability is a scheme that helps disabled people to lease a new car. If you have a disability or illness which impacts your mobility, then Motability is there to help. Available on thousands of cars, Motability allows people to use their qualifying mobility allowance to lease a new car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, scooter or powered vehicle. The service can also help with adaptations required to help with driving, accessing or storing the vehicle should you need it.

How Do I Choose a Car?

It’s easy to find your next Motability car with Eden. We’ve got a wide range of accessible and inclusive transportation options, with cars ranging from the smart Hyundai i10 to the latest Vauxhall Frontera Electric, which comes with a free home charger as standard.

Once you’ve found a car that you like, one of our dedicated team members will be able to help you complete the paperwork and set up the leasing agreement.

How Do I Pay for a Motability Vehicle?

When getting a vehicle through the Motability scheme at Eden, there are no upfront costs, which makes it easier to get on the road for less. Essentially, from there, you’ll exchange your mobility allowance for a new car, with these payments going directly from your allowance provider to Motability.

The amount you pay will depend on the type of vehicle you choose and how much allowance you get. Some vehicles may fall short of the total allowance you have, but most will use the entirety of it. If you choose a more expensive car - or add optional extras - that go over your allowance, then you’ll need to pay the difference.

Do I Qualify for Motability?

The Motability scheme is available to anyone who qualifies for the following allowances:

  • Enhanced rate mobility is part of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Higher rate mobility is part of the Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

What Else is Included in the Scheme?

Getting a car through Motability means that you’ll get some additional benefits bundled into the cost of the lease. You’ll get insurance for up to three named drivers, as well as full servicing and maintenance cover.

For added peace of mind, Motability also includes full breakdown assistance alongside tyre repair and replacement should you suffer a puncture when you’re out and about.
