How Does Motability Work?

With the Motability Scheme, an extensive range of vehicles become available to you, where you can exchange all or part of your Motability allowance to lease a brand-new car. All you need to do is check your eligibility, choose a vehicle at a price that works for you, and the subsequent payments are automatically taken from your Motability allowance. This lease works on a contract basis over a three-year period, where at the end, you can exchange your vehicle for a newer model. What’s even more exciting is that a family member, carer, or friend who lives within five miles of a Motability Scheme recipient can drive the car on their behalf (you can nominate up to two people over 21 years old!).

Am I eligible?

The Motability scheme is available to individuals who receive certain mobility allowances. There is no age limit on your eligibility, and you don’t need to drive the vehicle yourself. If you receive one of the following approved benefits below, you can qualify for the scheme.

• Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP). Please note that the (PIP) is replacing the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for those with disabilities aged between 16 and State Pension age.
• Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
• War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
• Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

These allowances act as a financial contribution towards leasing a brand-new car from our extensive range of models. Keep an eye out for car models that do not require a deposit (called a NIL Advance Payment), while as for others, payment may be required at the beginning of the agreement. Additionally, you can apply on behalf of a child over the age of three who requires Motability and is receiving the higher Disability Living Allowance.

Some important notes – to be eligible for the scheme you must have at least 12 months of allowance payments left on your benefit. Furthermore, the Attendance Allowance is not a qualifiable benefit to get into the Motability scheme. With the option to modify your Motability car through Eden at no extra cost, your unique requirements are answered from wheelchair ramps to swivel seats, handrails and more. Beyond this, you may even be eligible for additional financial aid if you need more modifications to be made.

Taking the Motability journey will allow you to automatically receive a new car every three years at the end of your lease. This means that you won’t need to worry about your vehicle depreciating or selling it onwards – you just need to return the vehicle and choose a new one. At Eden, we’ll do the work for you by contacting you a few months before the end of your three-year lease to help you make another switch. Motability provides you with a completely streamlined car-leasing experience so that you can enjoy the endless benefits of a brand-new car without the additional stresses and expenses involved.

Bonus: With the Motability scheme at Eden, we can arrange and cover the expenses required to install a home charging point for your EV vehicle, including installation. If this doesn’t fit your lifestyle, Motability can instead give you access to the BP pulse network, which includes over 9,000 public charging stations.
