Most Improved SUV?: MG ZS Hybrid+

The MG ZS is one of this brand’s core SUVs. It’s always been a model that has offered top-notch equipment at a very affordable price, and it’s a car that we’ve always been fond of here at Eden. Recently, MG renewed the ZS with a fresh new look and a clever hybrid engine.

But how has the ZS changed, and what do you need to know about it? We’re going to be exploring everything you need to know in this article.

Design

MG has breathed new life into the ZS with this latest redesign. It’s an altogether sharper-looking car, with slim headlights sitting on either side of a large grille section, which helps to give the ZS a more dynamic appearance.

There is also a range of great colours to choose from, ranging from more traditional Arctic White and Black Pearl shades to eye-catching Battersea Blue and Dynamic Red colourways. Silver-coloured elements ensure that the ZS looks upmarket from all angles, too.

Interior

There’s a great combination of top-notch materials and practical elements inside the cabin of the ZS. Plenty of silver-coloured detailing helps to brighten up the feel of the interior, but you’ve also got handily-sized door bins and a large central armrest storage area to keep those loose items. It’s a five-seater, too, but all rear-seat occupants get plenty of space thanks to boxy dimensions, which ensure that everyone gets a good amount of headroom.

There’s loads of boot space to make use of, too. The MG ZS has a 443-litre boot which can be expanded to 1,457 litres when you fold down the rear seats. Those rear chairs fold in a 60/40 split for extra flexibility, too. There is a low loading lip as well, which makes loading heavier items into the boot of the ZS a lot easier.

Engine

Hybrid technology is one of the biggest changes that has come through to this newly refined ZS. At its heart is a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is then linked to an electric motor for a combined output of 193bhp. As a result, you’ll be able to manage 0-60mph in around 8.5 seconds.

The older petrol engine in the previous ZS had proven a hit, which is why MG chose to better it only by adding hybrid technology for improved efficiency. You can get up to 55.4mpg combined while CO2 emissions are impressively low at 115g/km.

Equipment

Good levels of standard equipment have always been core to MG’s appeal, and that’s much the same with the ZS, too. Two specifications are available - SE and Trophy - with the entry-level trim bringing features such as a 12.3-inch infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a sharp seven-inch display ahead of the driver. There’s even a parking camera at the rear to make positioning the ZS even easier.

Step up to Trophy and you’ll find features such as heated front seats included alongside a heated steering wheel, leather-style upholstery and rear privacy glass. But whichever version you opt for, you’re going to be getting a car with lots of features as standard.

Assistance systems

The MG ZS comes equipped with some of the very latest assistance systems designed to keep everyone aboard as safe as possible. Highlights include Active Emergency Braking, which can automatically apply the brakes if the car detects a hazard ahead, and Lane Keep Assist, which will ‘steer’ the car back into a lane if the system feels the vehicle swerving.

You’ve also got Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Zone Detection and rear-cross traffic alert, with that final feature sounding an alarm if the car detects a vehicle travelling behind while you’re reversing. They all work together to make the MG ZS as safe as can be.
