The highly-anticipated Car of The Year awards, having been hosted by What Car? every January since 1978, has wrapped up for another year.
Amongst the big winners for 2020 is Mazda, who have taken not just one, but two of the coveted accolades (and in two very different sectors of the auto market).
Clinching the award for Best Sports Car priced at under £30,000 is the iconic Mazda MX-5. Of the classic roadster, What Car? writes: “the soulful bark it produces makes it something to relish time and time again. The MX-5 will certainly give you far more aural pleasure than the Toyota GT86, and it’ll cost you less money to buy and run.”
On the other end of the spectrum comes the mighty CX-5 SE-L Nav+, which picked up the award for Best Large SUV under £28,000. As well as its driveability, the CX-5 was tipped for the award after being hailed as a perfectly-sized family car: “The Mazda CX-5 has no problem taking care of busy family life. There’s decent room on its rear bench for six-footers, while its boot is big enough for a pair of pushchairs. And folding its rear seats down leaves a flat extended bay to make loading easy… [it] also claims points by being more rewarding to drive than any of its rivals. Its 2.0-litre petrol engine is a strong, refined performer, while the confidence-inspiring handling that comes from plenty of grip and minimal body lean through corners means you can have fun on country roads.”
In closing, What Car?’s review of the SUV concludes: “The Mazda CX-5 is one of the best large SUVs you can buy.”
Both the MX-5 and CX-5 are available for test drive at your local Eden Mazda showroom.
