The new Vauxhall Frontera is one of the latest in a steady stream of SUVs to come from the firm. Following hot on the heels of the newly-updated Grandland, the Frontera is the car to slot between that larger model and the smaller Mokka, giving buyers a middle-ground choice.
Packed with equipment and features, the Frontera is also coming soon to Eden, alongside many of Vauxhall’s other key models. But what do you need to know about this exciting new SUV? In this article, we’re going to be finding out.
You might remember that the original Frontera - which arrived in the 1990s - incorporated a tall, boxy design and some of that has filtered through to this latest model. But there are some striking elements incorporated throughout this new SUV, with the most notable of these being the now-recognisable ‘Vizor’ front end that we’ve already seen put to good use in some of Vauxhall’s latest models.
The chunky wheel arches give it a bit more presence, too, while several colour options give you the freedom to customise the look of your Frontera - from eye-catching ‘Khaki Green’ to the bright ‘Canyon Orange’.
As with other Vauxhall models, the Frontera is offered with a series of powertrain options to ensure there’s something for everyone. There’s a 1.2-litre hybrid petrol option linked up to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, available with either 99 or 134bhp. You could get over 53mpg combined, too, so this option remains great for those drivers looking to reduce their fuel bills.
Then, there’s the electric model. With a 44kWh battery, this should return up to 186 miles of range, while 100kW charging means that you could go from 20 to 80 per cent charge in 26 minutes.
There are loads of great features to explore in the new Frontera. For one, it’s available in either five- or seven-seater configurations, with the latter being great for those larger families. You’ll also find 23 litres of additional storage dotted throughout the cabin, ensuring that it stays as tidy as can be. You’ll also find handy flexible straps in the centre console to help keep fragile items secure.
In the back, there are handy smartphone pockets in the front seat backrests and the seats themselves can be trimmed in a new fully sustainable recycled material. There are two USB charging ports for the people sitting up front and an additional two for those in the rear. For sure, there shouldn’t be any complaints about topping up devices in the Frontera.
The latest technology is something you’ll find in Vauxhall’s current range of vehicles and it’s no different in the Frontera. All versions get a rear-view camera as standard, alongside rear parking sensors and a 10-inch touchscreen. It’s in this main display that you’ll be able to access key media and navigation features, as well as smartphone connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Alongside this main screen is a 10-inch digital instrument cluster which aims to deliver a clear and concise view of all of the key information that you’ll need when on the move.
Vauxhall is keeping things simple with the available trim levels on the Frontera - there are just two. The range commences with Design trim level and with this, you get all the major features that you’d need, including wireless smartphone charging, high-performance Intell-LED headlights and the aforementioned 10-inch multimedia touchscreen. Plus, there are tinted windows, body-coloured bumpers and the front and rear, and rain-sensitive windscreen wipers.
Switch to GS specification and you’ll find that list of equipment bolstered with the introduction of a contrast black roof, more comfortable Intelli-Seats with an ergo feature - designed to take pressure off the user’s tailbone - 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and automatic climate control. However, whichever grade of Frontera you opt for, you’re set to enjoy a whole host of included features.
