Engine Management Light: What Does It Mean and Can You Drive?​

The engine management light is the amber engine-shaped symbol on your dashboard, and it appears when the car's computer detects a fault with the engine or emissions system. It covers a wide range of problems, from a loose fuel cap to a misfire that can cause lasting damage, so the way the light behaves matters as much as the fact it is on. This guide explains what the light is telling you, when it is safe to keep driving, and what happens next.

What is the engine management light?

The engine management light is officially called the malfunction indicator lamp, or MIL, and you may also see it referred to as the check engine light or EML. It usually appears as an outline of an engine block, coloured amber or orange.

Your car's engine control unit constantly monitors readings from sensors around the engine, fuel and exhaust systems. When a reading falls outside the expected range, the ECU stores a fault code and illuminates the light. That code can then be read through the car's diagnostic port using the correct equipment.

It is normal for the light to come on briefly when you turn on the ignition and then go out once the engine starts. That is the system checking itself. A problem is indicated when the light stays on, or comes on while you are driving.

The engine management light is not the same as a service reminder or an oil change indicator, which are separate warnings about scheduled maintenance rather than a detected fault.​

What does the engine management light mean?

It's important to understand what the warning lights on your dashboard mean. The behaviour of the light gives you a rough guide to how urgent the fault is.

A steady amber light

A steady light means the ECU has logged a fault but does not consider it an immediate emergency. The car will often drive normally, and the cause can be relatively minor. It still needs investigating, because the fault may worsen and it can affect fuel consumption and emissions in the meantime.

A flashing engine management light

A flashing light is treated far more seriously. It generally indicates an active misfire, where unburnt fuel is passing into the exhaust system. This can overheat and permanently damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive component to replace.

If the light is flashing, reduce your speed, avoid heavy acceleration and stop somewhere safe as soon as you can. Continuing to drive is likely to increase the damage.

The light with reduced performance

Some faults put the car into a protective mode, often called limp mode, where the engine limits its power to prevent further damage. You may notice the car will not rev beyond a certain point or feels significantly slower. This is a deliberate safeguard rather than a separate fault, and the car should be taken for diagnosis rather than driven at length.

Can you drive with the engine management light on?

You can usually drive a short distance with a steady amber light, provided the car is running normally with no unusual noises, smoke, temperature warnings or loss of power. In practice, this means driving carefully to a garage or completing a short journey home rather than setting off on a long trip.

With a flashing light, you should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so. The same applies if the engine management light appears alongside a red warning light, or if the car is running roughly, overheating or losing power.

It is also worth remembering that the fault is still present even when the car feels fine. Emissions faults in particular often produce no noticeable symptoms while still causing the vehicle to run inefficiently.

Common causes of an engine management light

Hundreds of fault codes can trigger the light, but a smaller group accounts for most cases on petrol and diesel cars:

  • Oxygen or lambda sensors — these measure exhaust gases so the ECU can adjust the fuel mixture, and they are a frequent cause of emissions-related codes.
  • Mass airflow sensor — measures the air entering the engine, and can cause rough running or poor economy when it fails.
  • Spark plugs and ignition coils — worn or failing components can cause misfires, which is often what triggers a flashing light on a petrol engine.
  • A loose or damaged fuel filler cap — on many petrol cars this affects the evaporative emissions system and can be enough to illuminate the light.
  • EGR valve faults — the exhaust gas recirculation valve can become clogged with carbon deposits over time.
  • Diesel particulate filter issues — on diesel cars, a partially blocked DPF can trigger a warning, particularly on vehicles used mainly for short journeys.
  • Catalytic converter problems — often the result of an underlying fault, such as a long-running misfire.

Because the same symptom can have several possible causes, a diagnostic check is the only reliable way to identify which applies to your car.

Does an engine management light fail an MOT?

An illuminated engine management light will fail the MOT on most modern cars. The DVSA inspection manual requires testers to turn on the ignition and confirm that the MIL illuminates and then goes off, and the check applies to petrol and hybrid vehicles with up to eight passenger seats first used on or after 1 July 2003, to petrol vehicles with more than eight passenger seats first used on or after 1 July 2008, and to gas and bi-fuel vehicles first used on or after 1 July 2008. Equivalent rules apply to diesel vehicles first used from July 2008.

A light that stays on is recorded as a major defect, which means the vehicle cannot be issued with a pass certificate. A bulb that fails to illuminate at all is also a defect, because the tester cannot confirm the warning system is working.

Getting the fault diagnosed and repaired before your MOT is due is usually far less disruptive than dealing with a failure and a retest.

Should you reset the light yourself?

Clearing the light without repairing the fault is rarely worthwhile. The code will normally return once the ECU detects the same problem again, and in the meantime you lose the stored information that helps a technician trace the cause.

Disconnecting the battery to clear a code also resets the car's readiness monitors, which record that the onboard systems have completed their self-checks. A tester can see when these have not yet run, so the car may still be refused a pass.

The one exception worth trying is the fuel filler cap. If the light appeared shortly after refuelling, check that the cap is properly tightened and undamaged. It can take several journeys for the system to clear the code on its own if that was the cause.
