Electrification has never been so talked-about. As manufacturers explore more cutting-edge engine technologies to reduce vehicle emissions, hybrid cars have reached new heights, while electric vehicles continue to offer longer ranges and more advanced technology.

Purchasing a used electric or hybrid car offers a big opportunity, too, as it brings the possibility of improved running costs at a lower price than a brand-new car. Fiat 500

A hybrid version of the Fiat 500 takes the vehicle from an already-efficient city car into something genuinely impressive. Essentially, the car’s 1.0-litre petrol engine is joined by a compact 12-volt electric motor. While this electric motor can’t power the car on its own like a ‘self-charging’ hybrid, it helps to reduce the strain on the petrol engine, which, in turn, helps boost efficiency.

You still get all the same great style and character as you would from the ‘regular’ 500, but you should be able to get around 50mpg from this mild-hybrid.

Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai has quickly established a reputation for its rock-solid electric vehicles, having been one of the main driving forces behind the technology a few years ago. Today, it has a great range of EVs, and these have started to enter the used market, too, bringing all the same great tech but at a lower price.

The Kona Electric is arguably one of the brand’s most well-rounded electric cars. With a funky crossover design, it can turn heads, but it’ll also manage around 300 miles from a single charge, depending on the model. Vauxhall Corsa Electric

Vauxhall has adopted a ‘multi-energy’ policy for many of its cars, meaning that they’re offered with a variety of powertrains, including both petrol and electric. Mazda CX-60 (DIESEL MHEV)

Diesel might seem less popular, but Mazda still sees some worth in this fuel type and has even introduced hybrid technology to make things even more efficient. This technology is put to great use in the brand’s mid-size CX-60, which not only has a stylish design but also an intuitive interior which features lots of good materials.

Despite being a relatively large car, the CX-60 in diesel mild-hybrid form should manage up to 50mpg, too, showing just how well this technology can work to reduce fuel bills.

Toyota RAV4

Toyota has always been a firm believer in hybrid technology - you only need to look at the Prius - as a way of making petrol engines more efficient. You’ll find Toyota’s hybrid systems in the RAV4, too, revolutionising this quirky-looking SUV into something which blends a chunky, off-road-inspired design and a tech-filled cabin.

You could get just over 50mpg from a front-wheel-drive version, while there isn’t much of a penalty for opting for the all-wheel-drive model, as it should still achieve around 48mpg.

MG HS

MG has managed a true turnaround, switching from a creator of rather classic-feeling sports cars and saloons into one of the most trusted EV brands around. However, it still has a solid range of hybrids, including the practical and well-priced HS.

It’s available both as a self-charging or plug-in hybrid, too, meaning that there’s an option for all types of drivers looking to get behind the wheel of this spacious SUV.

Peugeot E-3008

Peugeot has been on something of a roll lately, creating a range of cars which bring some very eye-catching style. However, this is backed up by some great technology, too, as well as electric models, which deliver plenty of range.
