Can I Get an EV on the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme is a way of helping those with disabilities or mobility limitations to get behind the wheel of a new car for less. Here at Eden, we’re proud to be part of the Motability scheme, which means we’re on hand to make sure that you find the right car for you the first time.

While the range of vehicles on the Motability scheme is extensive, what if you’re looking for an electric vehicle? Here, we take a look at some of the key questions you might have about getting an EV through Motability.

What is Motability?

As mentioned, Motability helps those with disabilities or mobility limitations with the cost of transport. There’s no upfront cost, and your payments are split into even monthly amounts depending on your allowances.

If you receive one of the following approved benefits below, you can qualify for the scheme.

  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP). Please note that the PIP is replacing the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for those with disabilities aged between 16 and State Pension age.
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

How does it work?

It’s all very simple. Your benefits allowance acts as a financial contribution towards the cost of leasing a new car from our range here at Eden. For some, there’s no advance payment to make, whereas others might require one to start with. You’re also able to apply for a child over the age of three who qualifies for Motability and receives the higher Disability Living Allowance. Once you’ve selected your car, the lease works on a contract basis over three years. When it finishes, you can then exchange your car for a newer model. Plus, a family member, carer or friend can drive your car, since you’re able to nominate up to three people per vehicle.

There’s also something called a New Vehicle Payment, which is a one-off £750 payment available once per customer. You can use this to put towards the Advance Payment on the car, or receive it in full after you get your vehicle.

What else is included?

Everything is bundled into the Motability lease scheme. You get insurance for up to three named drivers, as well as road tax and full 24-hour breakdown cover. All of your maintenance and servicing is included, too, alongside consumables such as tyres. There’s a 60,000-mile allowance for the full duration of the contract, too, with a charge of five pence for every mile over the limit.

Can I get an electric vehicle?

Absolutely! At Eden, we’ve got a broad range of the latest electric vehicles to choose from. Plus, we can arrange and cover the expenses of getting a home charging point installed, which can help to make topping up your new EV even easier. If you’re not able to have a charger installed, we’ll instead give you quick and easy access to the BP Pulse network and its over 9,000 UK chargepoints.

What EVs are available?

If you’re after a cutting-edge electric vehicle, then you’ve come to the right place. Here at Eden, we’ve got a great range of the latest EVs, but if you’re struggling to choose, then here are some of our favourites.

Vauxhall Frontera

The Frontera name might’ve been worn by a rough-and-tough four-wheel drive over a decade ago, but it has now returned as a super-sharp EV. The new Vauxhall Frontera is available with nil advanced payment on the Motability Scheme, too, and with a range of up to 253 miles, it’s got a lot of distance to offer between trips to the plug.

At Eden, we’re currently offering the Frontera with a free home charger to help make using this EV even simpler.

Hyundai Inster

We’ve been bowled over by the cutesy Inster here at Eden. Not only is it infused with a retro feel, but it’s also got loads of great technology, such as a large main screen and handy seats which fold completely flat should you need to load something larger into the car.

It’s got a range of up to 229 miles from a single charge, too, and thanks to rapid charging capabilities can go from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

Peugeot e-3008

Peugeot has been undergoing a style revolution over the past few years, and that’s particularly evident in the new e-3008. Sharper and more stylish than ever, the e-3008 is a practical and comfortable SUV with loads of technology, including Peugeot’s clever ‘i-Cockpit’ system, which cocoons the driver in screens and handy controls.

The e-3008 has a really impressive range to offer, too, with up to 326 miles coming from standard range models.
