The Importance of Regular Servicing for Electric Vehicles

EVs are undoubtedly occupying the headlines of the automotive industry and it's for good reason. While their lower emissions, running costs and smooth driving experience greenlight people's approval, this doesn’t make them indestructible. It's certainly true that EVs generally require less maintenance than regular-fuelled cars, nonetheless, they must be cared for to ensure the best safety and efficiency in the long run.

So, what are the benefits of regularly servicing electric cars?

Preventative maintenance: Think of regular servicing as an early warning system for your EV, you prevent potential issues, no matter how unlikely, from ever developing. A proactive approach not only saves you money but also keeps your EV running smoothly.

Enhanced safety: Safety should always be a top priority, regardless of the type of vehicle you drive. Regular servicing ensures that all safety systems in your EV are ready for any circumstance.

Extended battery life: The battery is undoubtedly the heart and soul of any electric vehicle. It's also one of the most expensive components to replace. To save money on its replacement, and increase your driving range, regular servicing can give your EV's battery the attention it deserves,

Peace of mind: A serviced EV is one less thing to think about, so you can spend more time enjoying your drive and less time worrying about the unexpected.

The frequency of servicing your EV may vary depending on its make and model, but it is generally recommended to schedule servicing at least once a year or every 18,000 miles, whichever one comes first. If you're uncertain about the specific servicing requirements for your EV, check the owner's manual. At Eden, we conduct a comprehensive inspection of your EV, from battery health to electronics, tyres, brakes and more. Any necessary repairs or maintenance will also be taken care of, ensuring your vehicle remains in top-notch condition.

Understanding is the Key: How an EV Runs

EVs show the potential of modern automotive engineering, but it doesn’t need to be shrouded in mystery. By running solely on electricity stored in a powerful battery, an EV takes simple scientific concepts and converts them into an easily controlled system. Let’s go through the system of how an EV runs.

The Power Source - The journey of an electric vehicle (EV) commences with its power source - the battery. Tucked away within its core in a series of smaller power cells, the battery stores a reservoir of chemical energy, ready to be converted into electrical energy that moves to the electric motor.

Electric Acceleration - As you press down on the accelerator pedal, the battery springs to life, releasing a surge of electricity. This electrical current sets the stage for an intriguing phenomenon known as electromagnetic induction that occurs in the motor.

Electromagnetic Induction - The electricity from the battery surges to the heart of the EV: the electric motor. The electric motor contains a coil, and when the electricity is passed through it, a magnetic field is generated around it. Magnets push and pull, and the in an EV motor, the magnetic field from the coil turns a rotor. With more electricity moving to the coil, the rotor will spin faster and faster (this is electromagnetic induction in a nutshell).

The Spinning Rotor Turns the Wheels - A spinning rotor is all you need to get things moving. The mechanical energy from the rotor spins the driveshaft which in turn, spins the wheels. More pedal means more electricity - more electricity means more magnetism - which then spins the motor (and the wheels) faster. Elegantly complex and simple at the same time.

Silent Motion - There are no explosions, no emissions, and far fewer moving parts. This allows EVs to have less wear and tear than regular cars. The only sound you may hear is the quiet hum of a spinning rotor, but batteries are quiet, magnetic fields are quiet, and smoothly spinning rotors are quiet. This doesn’t mean there isn’t friction - the rotor, bearings, and housing will still take a beating over time and use, which is why maintenance is essential!

It gets much more complex than this! But for now, the basics will suffice...

Potential Electric Car Issues and Helpful Maintenance Tips

Electric vehicles (EVs) may be low on maintenance, but a few key components might require your attention. Before you take your electric chariot onto the open road, consider these common issues, and take on board our helpful maintenance tips below:

1.Battery Health: The battery is the lifeblood of your EV, and its well-being is one of your top priorities. Over time, the battery gradually loses its charge-holding capacity due to extreme temperatures, frequent fast charging, and deep discharges. Regularly checking the battery's health and ensuring it's adequately charged will keep your EV in prime condition.

Tip: Even if you're not driving, don't neglect your EV's battery. Regular charging maintains its health and prolongs its lifespan.

Tip: Your EV handbook will give you specific battery care advice from the manufacturer.

2. EV Motor: The electric motor and drive train are the dynamic duo that must be cared for; if one goes, so does the other. Keep these components in shape with frequent inspections for wear and tear.

Tip: Treat your EV gently by avoiding abrupt acceleration and braking. Embrace smooth driving habits to protect both the battery, brakes and more...

3. Tyre Maintenance: Just like any vehicle, tyres play a vital role in an EV's performance. Keep a watchful eye on their condition, checking for signs of wear and tear. Due to the added weight of the battery, EV tyres can wear out more quickly.

Tip: Rotate your tyres around every 5,000 to 8,000 miles (depending on your manufacturer's advice) - this ensures even wear and boosts longevity and efficiency.

4. Brake System: EVs rely on regenerative braking to recharge their battery, making it even more important to make sure this system is working properly.

Tip: Treat your EV to periodic inspections which can identify and address potential issues early.

5. Cooling System and HVAC Servicing: A cool battery and a comfortable cabin are crucial for a smooth EV experience. Regularly service the cooling system and HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) to keep your EV's temperature under control – advice for this can be found in your EV handbook.

Tip: Extreme temperatures can impact an EV's performance. Protect EV from hot summers or chilly winters to ensure its longevity.

6. Software Updates and Firmware Upgrades: Just like your smartphone, your EV can receive software updates and firmware upgrades. These over-the-air updates enhance performance and fix bugs, so make sure to install them ASAP.

Note: While these tips are helpful, ultimately a professionally trained mechanic will provide you with the best solutions that are tailored to you and your EV’s health.

Common FAQs

What is the Cost of Servicing an Electric Vehicle?

The cost of servicing an electric vehicle (EV) varies depending on the make and model, as well as the type of service required. At the dawn of EVs, their servicing was typically more expensive due to the rarity of their parts, but today, their commonality means an abundance of servicing options, making them of similar (or less) cost to their ICE counterparts. Factors influencing the cost of servicing an EV include:

  • The age and mileage of your EV
  • The type of service required
  • The make, model, and any special requirements of your EV

While we cannot quantify any specific costs due to the variability as described above, we at Eden can assure you of affordable, comprehensive, and streamlined servicing. Feel free to contact us with your query to be provided with a great-value quote promptly!

What are the Warranty Coverage and Maintenance Programs for Electric Cars?

Warranty coverage and maintenance programs for electric cars vary among manufacturers. However, most offer a standard warranty covering the battery and major components for a certain period.
